10 Spring Essentials every Brit Needs...

This time of year can be a royal pain in the behind at times with regards to the weather. The sun likes to deceive us and then we leave the house with only a light jacket to find its actually arctic levels of freezing and don't even get us started on those hailstones. Sun one minute, golf ball sized hail the next. Us Brits have to be prepared for it all, and so there's certain items that no Briton should be without. We've compiled the top ten spring essentials every Brit needs to own if they want to survive a Spring in the land of all weathers, and most of them should preferably be kept on your person at all times. 1. The umbrella - well of course this has to be the number 1 essential. It's best to carry a small umbrella in every bag you own just to avoid getting caught out! 2. The Parka Jacket - ah the parka, the jacket which will see you through every eventuality from muddy festivals to weekend trips abroad. Normally they are fleecy on the inside to keep you warm and have that all important waterproof exterior. Win win. 3. Wellington Boots - can you see a trend developing here? Welly boots are now seen as a pretty fashionable item though so you can easily get away with them for more than just a festival. We love the colourful Hunter styles. 4. A Pair of Sunglasses - did you know that the sun can harm your eyes even through clouds? Apparently in cities we are much more susceptible to sun damage because most of the time we don't even realise the sun is hitting us through all of the pollution. Always carry your favourite sunnies and even if you feel a bit silly wearing them on a cloudy day, we promise it's doing you good. 5. The multifunctional scarf - as well as your winter woolies, everyone needs a lighter scarf which can work with all of your outfits and easily be thrown into your bag. One amazing scarf can be tied around your hair when it gets warmer, around your neck when its a bit cooler and added to bag when you just need a bit of colour injected into the outfit. 6. A transitional dress - a dress that's easy to throw on in a fun floral print is a must for a british spring. Add tights and boots on colder days, go bare legged and add a denim jacket on warmer days. 7. A pair of 'wear with anything' boots - its not quite sandal weather but your ready to give up the winter shoes so a cute ankle boot is definitely your friend at this time of year. Wear with that dress we mentioned above and layer your legs as appropriate. 8. The lightweight knit - it may look sunny sometimes but once the sun goes so does any heat that came with it and you can be left rather cold come evening so a lightweight knit is the ideal in between. Keep it thin and easy to throw over tees and under jackets and that way it can be rolled up and slipped in your bag should the sun come out. 9. A great hair accessory - you know the scenario, you do your hair lovely first thing in the morning and by the time you reach the office having battled the elements you look as if you crawled backwards through a bush. Keep a jazzy hair accessory on you at all times to save you from having to survive a whole day of bad hair. Whether its a stylish bobble or glam headband, it's worth keeping in your handbag. 10. A bag big enough to fit all of the above!

We're loving an all gold jewellery look at the moment and it seems one of our blogger ambassadors, Anneli of the blog What I Bought Today is in agreement. We asked her to style up one of our most popular necklace designs, the love necklace, and along with some of our gold stacking rings she's put together a great easy weekend look. She's made double denim look pretty damn stylish and the gold tones of her jewellery compliment the subtle shades of her outfit perfectly. Read more about Anneli's styling tips below... NYFW AW14 Street Style Trends

Fashion month is under way and while we are excited about everyone descending on the cobbled streets of Somerset House for London Fashion Week in a few days, the style on the streets of New York has been pretty captivating this season. With the recent snow storms and sub zero temperatures that the city has been experiencing, the fashionable have had to rethink their usual stylish combos and seek out clothes that can both wow the photographers and keep them from hypothermia. Because of this the NYFW AW14 street style trends have given way to some exciting new fashion movements. As we've been keeping a beady eye on the trends as they happen (AW14 catwalk trends to come in a seperate post) we've done the scouring and collating for you and put together the top five styles to try this season as seen on some of our favourite bloggers, journalists and celebs. Street Style from NYFW1. Monochrome It may seem an obvious choice for fashion week (you can't go wrong with all black right?) but not such an obvious choice for Spring. Yet every combo of monochrome possible has been spotted over the last week from prints to geometry to leather to stripes. Luckily this is one trend that's relatively easy to do year round so pick up some key monochrome pieces to add to your wardrobe now. Street Style from NYFW2. Pastels We've mentioned it already over on Facebook and Twitter but pastels are big news for this Spring, maybe even more so than last. The ubiquitous pink coat still seems to be going strong, but shades of ice blue and creamy whites are to be added. For top fashion brownie points this season however, it seems you need to team a pastel ensemble with a bright fluoro accessory. Pastel meets neon, we like? Grab some pastel pieces here. Street Style from NYFW3. Bright Accessories So we hate to brag but didn't we call this one just last week? Yup we predicted an outbreak of winter bright accessories and we were right! bright pink and blue bags were spotted everywhere and a micro trend of bright printed scarves around the head warned off the cold. You can shop printed scarves here and see our range of neon accessories here. Street Style from NYFW4. Fur The cold weather may have had a big part to play in this one but everyone who's anyone was sported a teddy bear fur coat this NYFW season and leading on from the above trend, the brighter the better. As well as coats all other fur accessories are game too from hand muffs to bag accessories and Russian style hats. Street Style from NYFW5. Prints The number one print this season had to be the tartan check, closely followed by stripes and geometric florals. Bright colours once again reigned but adding printed pieces to an outfit was the best way to layer up in the cold weather. Those were our top five trends from NYFW Aw14, we'd love to hear from you if you spotted any others? We'll be back with a post on the jewellery trends from fashion week soon but as always in the meantime tweet us @annalouoflondon or chat to us on Facebook.

Radiant Orchid - How to Wear the Colour of the Year

Every year colour experts, Pantone, announce an official colour of the year. The decision is made through a variety of measures by a worldwide team of representatives from colour standards groups, and can depend on all sorts of influences such as trends, economy and the overall zeitgeist of the time. For example when the colour Honeysuckle was declared as the colour of 2011 it was stated as so because; "In times of stress, we need something to lift our spirits. Honeysuckle is a captivating, stimulating color that gets the adrenaline going – perfect to ward off the blues.". The colour is decided upon almost a year in advance and then distributed throughout so you can often expect a peak of the colours use in floral, fashion and consumer trends. 2014's shade has been declared as Radiant Orchid, a sweet and punchy light purple hue. We're pretty sure this colour will be whinging its way onto the high street and into your wardrobes before long so we thought we'd put together some ideas on how to wear the colour of the year. street style inspiration of colour purpleAs you can see from the above inspiration, there is plenty of ways to introduce this colour into your wardrobe from girly skirts to statement coats and shoes. But of course as per usual we are most excited about the accessories (well c'mon it is the best way to inject colour into your outfits no?) This purple colour works perfectly in the shape of a statement necklace against a crisp white shirt and looks great tied into hair of all shades. It may just be one of the easiest colours of the year to pull off. Radiant OrchidHere's our top picks... 1. Double heart hairclip 2. Miss Anna star crystal hair clip 3. Crystal acrylic earrings 4. Beetlejuice Acrylic necklace 5. Purple Haze Luxe necklace 6. Purple emperor rose earrings 7. Miss Anna strawberry hairband 8. Miss Anna crystal bow hairslide 9. Penny strawberry pendant What do you think of the colour of the year? How will you be wearing it this season? Tweet us @annalouoflondon or leave us a comment on our Facebook page.

Trend: Heavy Metals

You may be a bigger fan of Kylie than Kiss when it comes to metal of the music variety, but there is no reason why you can't be a full on heavy metal fan in jewellery terms. Heavy metals are big news this season which means abandoning that usual mantra of less is more. In this game, the thicker, heavier and shinier, the better. Heavy Metal Jewellery inspiration pics So how to tackle the trend? Well contrary to what you may be thinking, you don't need to overhaul your style and start wearing lashes of black eyeliner and shaping your hair into spikes. Despite the connotations, the trend for heavy jewellery doesn't necessarily come with that of heavy grungy fashion. In fact, so far in the style stakes, it's been quite the opposite and we've seen models and celebs alike donning thick metal jewels with either glam sophisticated evening wear or casual weekend wear. Simple items work best such as all black or all white ensembles teamed with one shade of heavy metal bling, or denim and separates accentuated with a lashing of hammered and textured jewels. Pieces to look out for with this trend include chunky choker style necklaces or thick chains, simple stacking rings in various metal shades and hammered metal bracelets and arm bands. Here's five of the best from the ALOL collection... Anna Lou of London heavy metal jewellery items1. Gold hammered ID bracelet 2. Couture Luxe Necklace 3. White frost Studded bangle 4. Darkness chain bracelet 5. Monogram signet ring What do you think of the heavy metal trend?

How the Bloggers Wear It... Winter Brights!

We loved how fashion blogger Lucy from Shiny Thoughts styled our hot pink studded wrap bracelet in this colourful outfit post so much we've decided to create a whole post around it! As seen on Shiny Thoughts Image from Shiny Thoughts As a self confessed lover of all things colourful and shiny (hence the blog name) Lucy doesn't play by the rules when it comes to fashion and will often be seen sporting bright colours  and bare legs (so brave!) in the winter months. What we loved about this Winter brights outfit particularly was the fun and energy it exuded, and all simply by adding a touch of colour to your winter wear. Even if your not quite ready to put the black opaques away (brr!) and are still bundling up in your winter coat every day, adding punchy primary's and zesty neon's through your accessories is an easy way to make sure your outfit stays on the bright side of the colour spectrum and doesn't edge into the dull. colour_crush With Lucy's fearless approach to colour as our inspiration, we've put together a colour wheel of ideas to get you started... 1. Green - The Checkerboard bangle (see all green items here) 2. Yellow - the Shooting Star bangle (see all yellow items here) 3. Orange - the Love at First Sight Earrings (see all orange items here) 4. Red - the Juicy lips necklace (see all red items here) 5. Pink - The Bonito chain bracelet (see all pink items here) 6. Purple - The Purple Rose earrings (see all purple items here) 7. Blue - The Mesmerise Silk Scarf (see all blue items here) 8. Turquoise - The Jade bracelet (see all turquoise items here) What do you think of bright colours for Winter? Will you be rocking the trend?
