TREND UPDATE: Chunky Chains and Ball Bangles

The transitional period from Winter to Spring is an exciting time for many reasons, predominantly because with our entry into March comes the promise of brighter days and even British Summertime as the clocks change to adapt to all that daylight we're getting. However when it comes to fashion, the transition can be much trickier. Shedding that cosy Winter coat is a risky game, and don't even get us started on the tights/no tights dilemma. The good news is that at least your jewellery can be carried through the seasons, and a couple of carefully chosen pieces can be just the transitional season update you need. Anna Lou's been keeping her eyes peeled to scope out the latest jewellery trends as usual, and two particular styles have really jumped out: chunky chains and ball bangles.   CHUNKY CHAINS Daisy Lowe stormed the LFW catwalk like the pro she truly is, wearing Vivienne Westwood designs and bizarre red face paint (which apparently took ages to remove too!) - leaving us in awe once more. We couldn't help but notice the powerful chunky chain around her neck, a style that was seen throughout Anna Lou's LFW street style journey too. Start with your arm candy - this Anna Lou chain is a great base to stack up unique charms and really express your personality.

BALL BANGLES

In a break from her usual grungy and raunchy style, Rihanna rocked up at Christian Dior's 2015 Cruise Show dressed in ladylike pink, paired with beautiful tumbling curls and classically chic jewellery - and was almost unrecognisable in the process! We couldn't help but lust over her choice of jewellery, stacking curved necklaces and bangles with delicate ball details to add streamlined chic to her look. Better yet, these bangles are identical to Anna Lou's newest drop - except ours feature engraved crowns for that Brit sparkle, obviously.

The Chunky Chain Comeback!

Chunky gold chains around your neck were once reserved only for 90s hip hop stars but now the bold statement form of neck candy is back and since Cara Delevigne walked the Chanel AW13 catwalk wearing a large chain choker, everyone from actress of the moment Lily Collins to fashion chameleon Rihanna has been spotted sporting them. While we always love a sophisticated dainty chain or delicate pendant, there is something to be said about carrying a bit of weight around your neck, quite literally. A bold necklace such as this means that you often don’t need to worry about any other accessories letting the avant garde of the necklace do all of the talking. It also means that your outfit can be kept quite simple meaning that all round the addition of a chunky chain makes getting dressed in the morning a whole lot simpler. So how do you wear the trend even if you don’t have Rihanna’s swagger or Lily’s cheekbones? Well whether gold, silver, gunmetal or a mix of all three, long or choker length, big chain links or small the rules of styling are pretty simple…
  1. Keep hair and make- up minimal – all eyes will be on your striking piece of metal, too much going on elsewhere will only distract.
  2. Stick to block colours – while a strong print can look totally fabulous, the best way to make a statement piece like this stand out is to accessorise it against one block colour, whether monochrome or bright. Personally we think bright gold looks super glam against white or purple, while gunmetal silver oozes style against black or red.
  3. Keep the rest of your jewellery small – don’t make your jewels fight against eachother, if wearing a bold necklace like this keep bracelets and rings minimal and complimentary.
Some of our favourite ways to wear the chunky chain can be seen above on our favourite celebs. Clockwise from top left: Lily Collins, Rihanna, Reese Witherspoon, Cara Delevigne, Nicole Richie, Katy Perry, Rita Ora, Gwyneth Paltrow.

Everyone’s wearing… Name Necklaces

We have all dreamed of having a ‘Carrie’ moment at some point, whether it be to do with stealing her wardrobe, her job or her men. But we can all agree that the most iconic Carrie item of all was her name necklace. Since that point, the name necklace has become an institution in jewellery design, with everyone from Rihanna to Lea Michelle to Miranda Kerr sporting it. This season in particular we have seen the name necklace rise in the fashion stakes, and now the trend has evolved from not just wearing your own name around your neck but that of your boyfriends, friends or even your children’s. While it may have been coined by Carrie all of those years ago, many others have since tried to put their stamp on the trend from celebrities to fashion bloggers to TV characters. Miranda Kerr is now rarely seen without her Flynn necklace around her neck, the name of her gorgeous boy with Orlando Bloom, while who can forget Glee character Rachael swapping her own name for that of boyfriend Finn in the show. Sienna Miller loves to rock hers as part of her boho fashion style and Ellie Goulding has trademarked the surname necklace trend. It seems for now this trend is here to stay, so why not start naming names! You can design your own name necklace at Anna Lou of London. Personalised Name Necklace
